From 1974 to 1980, Bob Pope was a trial attorney in the Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service. He developed, and maintains, professional relationships with revenue agents, special agents, revenue officers, and Chief Counsel Lawyers at the Internal Revenue Service, many of whom continue to work in Tennessee.
Since then, Mr. Pope has focused his law practice on tax procedures and processes of both the Internal Revenue Service and the Tennessee Department of Revenue. He works closely with accounting firms, certified public accountants and tax lawyers to provide coverage to tax procedure and process matters not routinely encountered by those professionals. Mr. Pope also works with businesses facing significant financial or other management problems in defining realistic solutions.
Mr. Pope lectures frequently on federal tax procedure and process. His presentations include seminars by The Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, The Tennessee Bar Association, The New York University Institute on Federal Taxation, The Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisers, The Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants, The Chattanooga Tax Practioners Club and The Tennessee Federal Tax Institute. Mr. Pope has served both as a director of the Mid-South Commercial Law Institute, and as its treasurer. He is a Trustee of The Tennessee Federal Tax Institute, and has served as its President (2005 and 2006). Mr. Pope is listed in The Best Lawyers in America (2007, Taxation) and Mid-South Super Lawyers (2006 and 2007, Taxation and Bankruptcy).
Mr. Pope served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1971 (Viet Nam, 1969-1970, 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor (25th Infantry Division) and 8th Field Hospital).
Mr. Pope continues a lifelong allegiance to the University of North Carolina men’s basketball team, tempered with at least one pilgrimage to Neyland Stadium each Fall. He is a struggling addict, and little more, to week-end golf. Mr. Pope hopes to run a second marathon.
